Sugar Skull, Sugar Cube Tutorial

Sugar Skull, Sugar Cube Tutorial

By Leandra Witchwood

These are great for Halloween and Samhain! I am so excited to share this with you!

Sugar Skulls for many years now, have been one of my most favorite elements of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. So naturally I turned into a giddy little girl when a few years ago a friend showed me how to make “sugar cubes” out of candy molds.

The sugar takes on the shape of any solid object in your mold. Of course as we made dozens of fall leaves, I was thinking of making SKULLS!!!

This is an easy project. The hardest part is waiting for them to dry & harden.

We have made it a tradition to host a Samhain Tea every year and these Sugar Skull “Sugar Cubes” are a huge hit!

So here is how I make it happen!

SugarSkullMaking_ Gather your tools and ingredients. You will need the following.

  • 1C Granulated Sugar
  • 1T Water
  • A mixing bowl
  • A Skull candy mold
  • Wax or parchment paper
SugarSkullMaking_2 Slowly add about 1 tablespoon of water to your sugar and mix thoroughly. Your sugar should be the consistency of damp sand.
SugarSkullMaking_3 It is important that you add the water slowly and in small amounts. Your sugar need to be able to form without falling apart.
SugarSkullMaking_5 Firmly and evenly press your sugar into your mold.
SugarSkullMaking_7 Turn out your skull onto the paper
SugarSkullMaking_6 Allow your skulls to dry for about 24 hours.

Store your skulls in an air tight container.

The mold I use holds about 1 Tablespoon of sugar per skull. Your mold may hold less. Make a bunch for your next gathering. Or make them for everyday use. You know that’s what I do!
