Walking the Labyrinth: From Stones to Seeds
Nearly 20 years ago, I found myself at a Reclaiming weekend retreat. At that point in my life, I carried deep heaviness inside me. Questions about my worth, fears about stepping fully into my path, and an aching sense of disconnection weighed on me like a lead cloak I couldn’t shrug off.
That night, beneath a canopy of stars, I was introduced to the labyrinth.
I’d heard of labyrinths before, but like most people, I confused them with mazes. I didn’t realize they are ancient designs and structures found carved into the land, built from stone, etched in cathedral floors, and painted on temple floors across the world. I knew they were more than mazes, but I didn’t yet understand the difference. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path in and one path out. You can’t get lost. You can only walk, turn, and surrender yourself to the spiral.
What I didn’t know then was that what seemed like a simple walk would change me forever.
Entering the Spiral
Before we began, our facilitator explained that labyrinths are containers for transformation. They invite us to bring our troubles, our questions, doubts, and our grief into the spiral, allowing the turning path to work upon us. We were instructed to reflect on what tugged most deeply at our souls. For me, it was the gnawing sense that I was not living authentically, that I was hiding parts of myself to be accepted by others. That ache followed me everywhere.
So, I stepped onto the path with my troubles clutched close, as though I were holding stones in my hands. The night was still, the stars bright overhead. The air smelled of grass and damp earth. As I walked, something unexpected happened. The labyrinth didn’t just hold my silence. It spoke to me. It touched something, soul-deep inside me.
When the Plants Began to Whisper
Each turn brought me closer to the plants along the edge of the labyrinth. Nettle stood proud, oak branches reached out above in strength and resilience, and wildflowers nodded gently in the breeze. I swear, they leaned in.
The messages didn’t come as words, but as impressions, subtle but insistent:
“You are held.
Protection is possible.
Healing is waiting, if you choose it.”
I felt surrounded, not just by the people who walked with me that night, but by the very land itself. I wasn’t alone. Even when it seemed like I had no one, I was never alone. By the time I reached the center of the labyrinth, the weight of what I carried weakened my knees. I sank to the ground, kneeling on cool grass as tears streamed down my cheeks. Around me, the group sang, their voices sounded faint and distant, though they were only feet away. The labyrinth became a vessel. A sacred container held me as long as I needed - until I was ready to rise again.
Emerging Changed
When I finally stepped out of the spiral, I was not the same. The burdens I carried in as stones had become seeds. Seeds of possibility, of healing, of the life I longed to live with authenticity and courage. That night was a rebirth. And I knew, deep in my bones, that I needed to share this kind of experience with others. Not long after, I began my training as a labyrinth facilitator. From there, my path as a Wortcunner (one who is touched by plant spirits and one who works with herbs and plant spirits) was set in motion.
What the Labyrinth Taught Me
The most vital lesson the labyrinth offered me was this: protection is not about walls. Walls keep us closed off, barricaded against the world. But true protection is about harmony, walking in right relationship with spirit, with plants, with our own sacred power. When we are connected, nourished, and rooted, nothing can truly pull us off balance. This understanding shaped the way I approached magick from then on. Every herb I worked with, every ritual I performed, carried the echo of that labyrinth night.
And it still does.
Herbal Wards & Shields: Plant Allies for Protection
One of the greatest gifts of that experience was learning to listen to the plants, not just as ingredients in a spell, but as living allies. Nettle, oak, and rose were not simply plants that night; they were protectors, teachers, and guardians. It’s from that lineage of experience that I created my Herbal Wards & Shields Workshop. This workshop is a guided dive into the plant allies that specialize in protection, shielding, and energetic defense. These are the same allies who first spoke to me in the labyrinth and have continued to walk beside me ever since.
If you have read this far, I would like to give you instant access to the whole workshop for only $47 (regularly $97).
The Witch’s Grove: A New Spiral
That first labyrinth walk didn’t just introduce me to plant spirits; it introduced me to a way of being. A spiral path that deepened my connection to the unseen world, to spirit, and to myself. That spiral has continued to unfold, leading me now to The Witch’s Grove: Working with Wild Spirits. Launching September 23, 2025, The Witch’s Grove is an immersive journey into animist magick, spirit work, and plant connection. It is a return to the Old Ways, where witches knew that the world is alive and every tree, river, and wind carries a voice.
This isn’t about memorizing correspondences. It’s about relationships. About hearing the whispers in the wild and knowing you belong. Like the labyrinth, The Witch’s Grove is a container. It will hold space for your transformation, your rebirth, and your authentic flourishing. Space is limited, and I hope you will join us! Once the doors open, the spiral begins.
A Circle Within the Circle
And of course, none of this unfolds in isolation. I welcome you to gather in The Rebel Mystic Coven, where we circle together in community. Join us in our bi-monthly meetings! This is where we root together, share our practices, and weave our collective magick. If you’re a part of the Coven, mark your calendar; you won’t want to miss it.
From Then to Now
When I look back on that first labyrinth walk, I see it clearly. I entered with fear, grief, and uncertainty. I emerged with authenticity, purpose, and seeds of power that would shape my life for decades to come. This is what the spiral path offers us: not an escape, but a chance to return. Not with walls, but with relationships. Not with burdens, but with potential.
The labyrinth changed me in the best possible way. The spaces I have created also have the potential to transform you and your journey.
