Witchcraft Without Reciprocity is Spiritual Theft
Reclaiming the Magick of Right Relationship
By Leandra Witchwood
There was a moment when I wasn’t sure I would ever publish this post. I wrote it several weeks ago in conjunction with some deep shadow work I was walking myself through. Even though these words burned inside me - raw, real, and rooted in truth, I hesitated. I feared backlash. I feared being misunderstood. I feared being seen as greedy, transactional, or unspiritual for saying what so many of us in this work already know: Witchcraft without reciprocity is spiritual theft.
Then an email landed in my inbox.
It was from a long-time podcast listener. It came with a tone of concern but also judgment. They challenged my decision to charge for my deeper offerings. They claimed we had said that “everyone must invest financially” in their path, and that we were abandoning community in favor of capitalism.
But here’s the thing…
The moment I read that message, my body didn’t recoil. My shadows didn’t panic. I felt… ease. Because I know what I stand for. And I know that asking for reciprocity is not shameful; it is spiritually ethical. That message became the mirror that revealed how meaningful this conversation really is, not just for me, but for everyone walking the witch’s path in today’s world. So I’m releasing this now. And I’m saying it clearly: If you consume spiritual work without offering something in return (energy, time, gratitude, testimonial, payment), you are disrupting sacred law.
It’s not about money. It’s about a relationship.
And I want to share what I’ve learned, lived, and fiercely reclaimed so that we can walk this path in balance again.
When Giving Becomes a Cage
For years, I believed that to be valuable, I had to give endlessly. I poured myself into my work rituals, writing, teaching, podcasting, and community building. I gave freely, and often, and eventually, I began to notice something heartbreaking:
The only time I felt seen was when I was giving too much of myself away.
The moment I rested, I disappeared.
The moment I asked for reciprocity, I was met with silence, criticism, or withdrawal.
I began to feel unwanted unless I was actively sacrificing myself. That’s not community. That’s extraction. And worst of all… I started to believe that maybe that’s all I was worth.
That belief is a lie, and dismantling it is part of the sacred work of reclaiming our power.
From Helper Identity to Sovereign Boundaries
Many of us begin our spiritual journey deeply rooted in the concept of the Helper Identity. We give. We serve. We say yes to everything because we want to be needed. We want to help. But here’s what happens when you begin to shift: When you stop letting people take from you endlessly, they don’t see it as a boundary; instead, they see it as betrayal.
You’re not being cruel. You’re breaking the cycle. And the ones who resist your healing the most are often those still trapped in their own lack of self-worth and projection. This is the painful but necessary evolution of the priestess path.
The Truth About Spiritual Work in a Capitalist World
To the person who emailed me and to everyone reading this, I want to clarify something. We have always offered free and low-cost resources to our community, beyond free podcasts. Free rituals. $5 spell sheets. Sliding scale readings. Payment plans. The reality is that this path also requires real resources to sustain itself. Writing blog posts, producing podcast episodes, mentoring students, creating courses, teaching rituals, holding sacred space… none of this is free to produce. There are many resources, tools and accomidations required for all these things to take place, including:
Hosting platforms
Editing tools/resources
Microphones
Internet service
Electricity
A physical place to do the work
Software subscriptions
Supplies
Time
Labor
Spirit/Energy
These things cost energy, time & money. And while I (like many) dream of a post-capitalist world, we’re not there yet. Until we are, money remains the most accessible form of energetic exchange. To ask for payment is not greed. It’s what allows me to continue offering free content as I expand my offering to include deeper dives into the subjects you want more of.
Let’s Do the Math: Let’s say I spend 15 hours creating a course that I sell for only $37.
That means I’m being paid about $2.47 an hour for my time and energy.
That doesn’t pay a single bill.
It’s not sustainable.
It doesn't fill my cup
And still some people balk and criticize.
We’ve been programmed to undervalue creative and spiritual labor. We’ve been taught that wisdom, healing, and guidance should be free. But historically, witches charged for their work because tithes, churches, or royal patrons didn’t exist for them. Somehow, we forgot that. We forgot that it takes the support of those around us to thrive. It’s time to remember and rewrite the messages we have been led to believe by the patriarchal culture we are rooted in.
Animism & The Law of Reciprocity
From an animist perspective, this is straightforward: taking something without offering creates spiritual imbalance.
We know this to be true because when we forage for herbs, we leave an offering.
We know this to be true when we harvest from the land and show respect.
We feed the spirits. We care for our altars. We give before we receive.
So why would we treat our human spiritual teachers any differently? To consume freely, over and over, without ever offering anything back, this is how the web begins to unravel.
And the result?
Your magic stagnates.
Your spirit team becomes quiet.
The connection dries up.
Our spiritual elders recoil and disappear.
It’s not punishment. It’s an imbalance. And like any good witch knows: What is imbalanced must be restored. If you are consuming without giving back, you are creating an energetic void. A vacuum that will eventually cause more harm than good. I have seen this vacuum deplete leaders more than a few times. As these leaders depart, they take with them valuable knowledge and experience. Ultimately, we lose one of our most valuable resources: our elders.
Visibility Without Self-Sacrifice
I used to believe that if I don’t overgive, I’ll be invisible.
But now I see it for what it is: Visibility that demands your exhaustion is not sacred. It is spiritual captivity.
You deserve to be seen for who you are, not just for what you give away.
You deserve respect without collapse. You deserve to be in the right relationship with your community, not endlessly depleted by them
It all begins by recognizing the pattern, breaking the expectation, through reclaiming your worth.
A Final Note on the Email That Inspired This
To the listener who wrote to me, thank you. I can feel that your words came from care, even as they carried projection.
And I want to say this lovingly:
Criticism without solutions is judgment.
A desire to reject capitalism must come with a viable alternative.
And expecting endless free labor from witches, teachers, and healers is part of the very system we’re trying to unlearn.
I will not burn myself out to appease someone else's shadows. I will not let burnout make me invisible and disappear. I will not stop naming what is sacred.
I was told to add up the value of everything I offer for free to demonstrate the importance of reciprocity. Each year, I give away over $2600 in free downloads, classes, workshops, and other opportunities. That's roughly $217 each month I should be charging for my work. I was not prepared for this number. This helped me realize that when I ask for compensation for the deep dives (containers, memberships, etc.) into the Craft, I am not being unreasonable. Those of you who have come to me to express your gratitude for writing this article, I am glad I could help you navigate this difficult terrain. I encourage you to add up the value of what you offer for free to your communities. I hope this exercise will help you realize your value and ease the stress of leaning in to ask for what you need, so that those who use your time, energy, and hard work will respect your efforts. The truth is, when you endlessly give, you will find yourself undervalued.
The following is the link to a page where you can find my free downloads, resources, and offers: FREE RESOURCES
Why do I offer so much for free? It's because I know we all need resources, and we don't always have the money to buy them. It is my way of giving back to the community. My hope is that those who partake will find it in them to give back as much as they take from me. 💜
Final Blessing
To every healer, witch, mystic, and spiritual worker reading this:
You are not selfish for wanting balance.
You are not too much when you need support.
You are not supposed to burn yourself out.
You are a steward of sacred power.

And when you reclaim reciprocity, you reclaim your power.
